June MGA Board Meeting
At 8:30 Randy Stanford called the meeting to order. Reports from Pro Shop and Greens followed. From Greens, Ben reported that Elkins received 4.5" of rain for the month and did not hamper course maintenance or special projects going on. Aerification used small holes and insured that 80% of the holes were filled with new sand for irrigation, aerification, and space for new roots to grow. Additional fertilizer and chemicals were applied for weeds and bugs. Starting with the Hills, tree companies will be thinning the treetops to prevent tree damage and opening the canopy for more sunlight to improve grass growth. Soon a second spreading of lime will commence to restore the Ph level to the short grasses for better health, color, and growth. Two additional projects will be restoring barren areas with grass along fairways and cart paths and improving the drainage on the Ravines. Cart Path repairs will start again when the growing season is over. Board praises were given for the efforts to improve golfing facilities at Elkins.
The Pro Shop has shown great energy with Cord Roberson, New Head Professional, to improve the golfing world at Elkins. You probably have noticed the improvement of scoring sheets for The Regulars, MGA, and ELGA scoring. Also, the introduction of Golf Scoring Genius for tournaments, event registration, and scoring is up and running. A QR Code for registration is available in Shop, on the ice machine white board, and will be in next MGA Eblast. The MGA Board was asked and approved the purchase of two 65" monitors for scoring in the patio area. These should be up shortly. Mr. Roberson, upon his arrival last month, was informed about problems with the tee which seem to be fully addressed. Mr. Roberson has added a new feature to the shop of taking pictures during events and posting them to the Elkins page.
A discussion was had between the Board, Greenskeeper, and Head Pro about the operation and appearance of the driving range. It was pointed out that 20-25% of the time for a round of golf is spent on the driving range, putting green, and sand trap. Elkins deserves a practice facility commensurate with top area courses. It was pointed out the club wash buckets were unattended for weeks, the mats were covered with grass clipping and dirt. The lack of yardage indicators was missing or never installed. The old sign for flag distance had not been used in months. Repair Divots sign had been removed. Also it was pointed out that members were parking carts by the sand trap which has been continuing prohibition and a barrier needed to be erected. An understanding wa reached to address the concers.
Board members gave their respective reports. Highlights were from Tournament Chair of no food for June Tournament, Par Three Tournament format, and implementation of "Slow Play Penalties" for the July event. The penalties are to be severe to ensure strict compliance. Discussion was had again on Tournament Payouts. All tournament fees go to payout. The CTP awards come from the MGA budget and no fees.
Tuesday or Jr. InterClub reported that total number of players available was declining and new blood was needed. If you are a competitive person and like dueling the challenge between the course difficulty and your golf skills, investigate Tuesday InterClub. Tuesday is like real golf metal play (with full Ghin Handicap) playing away and home with a partner using all your strokes. Tee time is 1pm and the playing team usually will have a pre-planned meal on the road for mingling.
Final business was the purchase of 21 new tournament flags designation Red, White, and Blue Distance Flags.
Meeting adjourned at 10:30.
